Introducing League of Legends Chat
League of Legends is a team game. Some game modes require 10 players to be online at the same moment. Some require 8.
When you have so many people online, it’s only natural to communicate with each other. Whether it’s your teammates or your opponents, it’s all the same.
Since its release, League of Legends has had a fully functional chat feature’.You are all likely already familiar with chat since you find it on every social media available. But the question is, "How to chat on League of Legends."
Well, to answer that question, we need to explain that there are several types of chat that you can find in League of Legends:
- Client chat – You can chat with people from your friends’ list that are online at the same time as you are or send them a message that they will see once they get back online.
- In-game chat with your teammates
- In-game chat with one of your teammates
- In-game chat with your opponents
- In-game chat with people on your friends’ list who aren’t playing the same game as you are.
- Voice chat
So, we have established the types of chat in League of Legends. Now let’s learn how to use every one of them.
Client Chat in LoL

- With the left click of your mouse click on the friend you want to send a message to

Now when we talked for a bit with our buddies, we want to go and play a few games. That brings us to the next chat we would like to use, and that is…
In-game Chat with Your Teammates
Once you are in the game itself you will probably want to have a word or two with your teammates. Whether you want to tell them your amazing strategy to win the game, or you want to congratulate them on the kill, it doesn’t matter there is a very simple way of doing it. Just follow these steps:

You have finished chatting with your teammates in League of Legends, but there is something that you would like to tell one of your teammates and don’t want other players on your team to see. To do that, we have a special little command that can help us. Let’s go over to another chat that we can use while playing League of Legends.

Now that we have all that figured out, let’s advance to our next situation where we can find ourselves while playing League of Legends.
In-game Chat with People that are on Your Friends List, but aren’t Playing the Same Game as You Are
There are two situations that can happen in this chat. The first one is that you are the one that wants to initiate the communication with someone from your friends’ list, while the other one is that someone from your friends’ list has already messaged you and you want to answer them. For starters, let’s see how to deal with the first situation:
- Press "Enter" on your keyboard
- The chat box will open on the bottom left side of your screen
- Type out /msg command in your chat
- Press "Space" on your keyboard
- Type out the Summoner’s name that you want to send your message to
- Press "Space" on your keyboard again
- Type out the message that you want to send
- Press "Enter" on your keyboard
Now let’s see the second situation:
- See the message in the chat box on the bottom left part of your screen
- Press "Enter" on your keyboard
- Type out /r command in your chat
- The game instantly recognizes this command and will reply to the last person who has sent you a direct message in the game, so this time you don’t have to type out their name.
- Type out the message you want to send
- Press "Enter" on your keyboard
But there is one more sneaky way to do this without typing any commands in the game’s chat. Let’s learn that one as well:
- While you are in-game press "Shift" and "Alt" buttons at the same time
- The game screen will minimize and your client window will pop up.
- Look on the right side of your League of Legends client, and you will find your friends list
- With the left click of your mouse click on the friend you want to send a message to
- Type out the message you want to send to your friend
- Press "Enter" on your keyboard
